In 2003, when university friends Jack Churchill and Toby Sutton decided to swap the campus pool table for conference rooms and take their passions for inclusivity, education and tech to establish an organisation to benefit those who think differently.
Text-to-speech tech caught their eye early on. The idea of simply scanning a line of printed text and hearing it aloud was music to Jack and Toby’s ears. With Jack’s first-hand experience of learning with dyslexia, he knew this technology would be a game-changer for those who think differently.
And just like that, Scanning Pens was born.
6 offices. 5 countries. 2 BETT Awards. And an impressive Queen’s Award for Enterprise later. Jack and Toby decided to expand their portfolio of brands to offer more ways to reach and support the communities they care about.

CEO and co-founder, Jack Churchill continues to champion the use of assistive technology through his position of Board Member for BATA (British Assistive Technology Association) and ATIA (Assistive Technology Industry Association). He is also proud to advocate for the Department of International Trade as an Export Champion!
To kick off 2023, Jack and Toby were honoured with an OBE for their services to international trade, and to the dyslexia, special educational needs and disability communities.
