At
Empowering Tech, we believe literacy should be accessible, engaging, and empowering for every learner, especially those who have struggled, felt misunderstood, or been ignored in traditional classrooms.
Literacy is about developing confidence, communicating effectively, and knowing your voice is meaningful - not just reading words.
This belief is at the heart of Literacy Junction. We created it so every learner feels welcome, supported, and able to make real progress, no matter their starting point.
By using structured, multisensory literacy support and inclusive technologies such as Scanning Pens, Literacy Junction helps remove barriers to learning and builds confidence to succeed.
Schools using
Literacy Junction with
Scanning Pens have seen up to 20 months of reading-age improvement in just 10 weeks, along with boosted engagement and confidence.
Progress is not only about numbers. It also shows in raised hands, brave attempts, proud smiles, and learners who start to trust themselves again.
A cast of characters you’ll instantly recogniseTo make learning enjoyable and captivating, Literacy Junction features a group of characters who represent the real learners we see in classrooms every day.
Each one illustrates a different approach to thinking, learning, and experiencing literacy. Together, they show us there is no single right way to learn.
Literacy Junction is home to a wonderfully varied crew of characters who feel instantly familiar because the real learners inspire them, as we see in classrooms every single day. You’ll probably recognise them straight away.
Each character represents a distinct approach to thinking, learning, and experiencing literacy.
Some people talk things through before they write them down, whereas some need space, reassurance, and a second (or third!) look.
Others learn best when they’re moving, laughing or experimenting their way through a mistake.
And a few are still figuring it all out, tentatively stepping forward, even when learning feels tricky. Learning can be loud or quiet, fast or slow, neat or messy. It can involve talking, moving, trying, pausing, and trying again.
At Literacy Junction, every approach is valued, every strength is celebrated, and every learner gets permission to show up exactly as they are, and that’s where the wonder starts.
Meet the Literacy Junction crew
So who are these colourful characters? Let us introduce you…
Atlas represents learners who think out loud. They are the child who always has something to say (which, we should point out, is never a bad thing).
Atlas brings ideas, questions, jokes, and sudden sparks of inspiration. In some settings, this enthusiasm might be labelled as being “too much” or distracting.
However, we recognise it for what it really is: engagement. Atlas shows us that talking is often how understanding takes shape. Speaking ideas aloud helps organise thoughts, make connections, and build meaning before anything ever reaches the page.
Then there is Egg, the gentle grower. Egg represents learners who are quieter, more reflective, and sometimes hesitant.
They may need instructions repeated, extra time to process information, or reassurance before attempting something new.
Egg reminds us that learning is not a race. Growth happens at different speeds, and with patience, encouragement, and appropriate support, confidence develops naturally.
Learners like Egg are given the space they need to feel safe, supported, and capable. Tools such as Scanning Pens reduce cognitive load, allowing users to focus on comprehension rather than on accessing the text itself.
Next, we have Inky Possible, who brings imagination and determination to Literacy Junction.
Inky stands for learners whose work might look messy, with scribbled notes, crossed-out words, or unfinished sentences, but who are deeply involved in learning.
Inky reminds us that mistakes are not failures; they show effort, curiosity, and bravery. These traits are so important and should be encouraged at every opportunity.
When learners know that perfection is not the goal, they are more willing to try, take risks, and keep going when things get tough. Inky shows us that learning does not have to be neat to matter.
We move on to Octopus, which represents learners who are high-energy and learn best through movement, touch, and hands-on exploration. An octopus may fidget, move constantly, or multitask in ways that can be misunderstood as a distraction.
This energy is recognised as a strength. Active, game-based learning and practical activities help learners like Octopus stay engaged and focused, turning movement into momentum.
With assistive technology that removes reading barriers, Octopus can channel that energy into imaginative thinking, problem-solving, and progress, rather than being asked to sit still and struggle.
Finally, there is Unknown, the brave beginner. Unknown refers to learners who are just starting or feel unsure and anxious about making mistakes. They may hesitate before starting, unsure where to begin or worried about meeting expectations.
Literacy Junction offers reassurance, structure, and patience, showing that not knowing is not a weakness.
It is the first step in learning. With clear guidance and supportive tools, learners like Unknown start to feel safe enough to try. Each small step forward is an act of courage, and over time, uncertainty turns into confidence.
The real impact of Literacy JunctionTogether, these characters reflect the learners we support every day: curious, creative, energetic, thoughtful, and full of potential.
Literacy Junction works because it doesn’t ask learners to change who they are. Instead, it adapts to them, honouring different learning styles, valuing neurodiversity, and providing practical support where it’s needed most.
With Literacy Junction and Scanning Pens working side by side, learners don’t just make impressive academic progress; they also gain confidence.
They develop self-belief, independence, and a renewed sense of joy in learning. They begin to see themselves not as “behind” or “unable,” but as capable learners with valuable contributions to make.
This is the true impact of
Literacy Junction. All learners are valued. Every voice is listened to. And every achievement, big or small, is recognised and celebrated.
