The future of education in the Criminal Justice System

Empowering Tech is advocating for better literacy support in the criminal justice system, ensuring individuals have access to assistive tools to improve their education and rehabilitation opportunities.

Scanning Pens (SP), one of our child companies, has made significant contributions to supporting individuals within the judicial system, particularly those with reading difficulties and neurodiversity.

Impact on education and life change

  1. Improved literacy: The ReaderPen Secure (now improved and replaced by the Secure Reader 2) allows incarcerated individuals to access reading materials independently, enhancing their education and literacy skills.
  1. Increased qualifications: Prisoners using reading pens have been able to overcome barriers created by illiteracy, enabling them to successfully gain qualifications.
  1. Enhanced independence: The device helps users develop reading independence, crucial for rehabilitation and reintegration into society. It’s also helping encourage a wider adoption of mentorship programmes found within the judicial systems by giving valued downtime for mentors.
  1. Broader access to learning: SP's technology opens up opportunities for prisoners to engage in various educational programs, including practical workshop courses.

Advocacy for neurodiversity and low literacy support

  1. Addressing high dyslexia rates: We recognise the high prevalence of dyslexia among prisoners (estimated at 30%) and have advocated for the provision of tools to support this population.
  1. Collaboration with researchers: We have worked with independent researchers to explore issues affecting educational outcomes of learners in prison, highlighting the need for more support. We also continue to hope to do this moving forward, not just in the UK but globally.

Relationship with David Breakspear

David Breakspear, who spent a significant portion of his life in the school-to-prison pipeline, now works alongside us to promote education and support for individuals with neurodiversity in the justice system.

Breakspear's background provides valuable insight into the challenges faced by individuals with learning difficulties in the criminal justice system, aligning with our mission to improve support in the justice system. Together, we have raised awareness about the importance of assistive technology and education in prisons.

By providing innovative solutions and advocating for increased support, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of those within the judicial system, particularly those with neurodiversity and low literacy skills.
